Buying a new PC can be an exciting endeavor, but it’s important to make sure you’re getting the right machine for your needs. Here are a few things to look out for:
1. Processor: The processor is the brain of the computer, so it’s important to choose one that can handle your workload. Intel and AMD are the two main competitors in the processor market, with options ranging from basic to high-end. You should chose a processor that is recent not only to get the latest features but also to reduce your chances of being ripped off. Computer shops in Uganda may try to pass off second hand computers as new. The chances of getting a 12th (current) generation processor computer as second hand are very slim as this is the newest version available. Don’t go older than 10th generation.
2. RAM: RAM (Random Access Memory) affects the speed at which your computer can run programs. Generally, you’ll want at least 8GB of RAM.
3. Storage: The two most common storage types are Hard Disk Drives (HDD) and Solid State Drives (SSD). SSDs offer faster boot-up times and access speeds but come at a higher cost. The benefits of getting an SSD drive are enormous in terms of performance, so do get one, you’ll thank us later!
4. Graphics: If you want to play games or work with graphics-heavy applications, you’ll need a graphics card. NVIDIA and AMD are the two biggest names in this arena.
5. Display: Ensure the display suits your preferences, with properties like resolution, screen size and colour production. Be mindful not to get a touch screen, unless it serves a purpose for you. Most people don’t really use them, yet they increase the price of the computer significantly and are also more expensive to replace.
6. Operating System: An operating system is the software that manages all of the computer’s hardware and software. Windows and Linux (Ubuntu) are the most common in new computers in Uganda though most of us are unfamiliar with Linux and end up uninstalling it for Windows. Though Linux is free, Windows isn’t and requires a license to operate without the annoying messages about activating it. Ask if the computer you’re buying comes with a genuine Windows license.
7. Battery Power: Choosing the right battery for your laptop when buying a computer is a crucial decision. It is important to keep in mind that a laptop’s battery life will depend on various factors such as usage, display brightness and battery capacity. The type of battery also plays a crucial role in the lifespan of the battery. Lithium polymer batteries tend to last longer and can withstand more charge cycles compared to lithium-ion batteries. The battery’s capacity, which is measured in Watt-hours (Wh), will determine how long the battery will last. Choosing a higher capacity battery will provide longer battery life but may also increase the weight and size of your laptop. Ultimately, if you have the time, it is important to research the different battery options available for the laptop you are interested in and consider your specific needs before making a final decision.
